GMC constructed their first true van in the mid-1960s called the Handi-Van and Handi-Bus. Light on creature comforts and powered by smaller engines during its first generation, GMC's van line-up later grew in size and eventually boasted V-8 as well as diesel engine power. Since 1996, the GMC Savana has been a utility player for commercial enterprise needing a large internal space for cargo or to seat up to 15 passengers. From the mid-1980s to the 2005 model year, GMC offered a small van equivalent to Chevrolet's Astro. The GMC Safari was available in passenger and cargo van configurations.
