Largely unchanged from last year, the 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche is an attempt to combine the best of pickups and SUVs. New features are the OnStar system, Bluetooth connectivity and a rear back-up camera that does not require a navigation system. The LTZ trim now includes features such as heated and cooled leather seats and a Bose surround-sound stereo as standard. Available with either 2WD or 4WD, 2WD models boast a 5.3L V8 with 310 hp and 335 lb-ft of torque and a new 6-speed automatic transmission. Optional is a larger 6.0L V8 delivering 366 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 14 mpg city/20 mpg hwy and 16 mpg combined for 2WD versions with the 5.3L engine. Chevy Avalanche photos show a flexible mid-gate design, a removable partition separating the cabin from the bed, which considerably enhances its functionality. The mid-gate design allows a variety of configurations, including a fully open pickup bed or a fully enclosed dry cargo area.
