New Chevrolet HHR safety features, including antilock brake system, stability control and side curtain airbags, are among the most significant upgrades for the 2009 model of this small 4-door wagon. Base LS and midlevel 1LT HHRs come with a 2.2L 4-cylinder engine rated at 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque, while optional on the 1LT and standard on the top-level 2LT model is a 2.4L 4-cylinder generating 172 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with the standard 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic. The SS comes with a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that pumps out 260 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque with the standard 5-speed manual transmission; these numbers drop to 250 and 222, when the optional 4-speed auto is selected. EPA fuel economy ratings for the 2.2L engine are 21 mpg city/30 hwy and 24 combined with the manual transmission, while a similarly equipped 2.4L model gets a 20/28/24 rating. The Chevrolet HHR SS models are surprisingly fuel efficient given the extra performance, having a 21/29/24 rating with the manual transmission.
