Updated for 2011 the Toyota Matrix is a five-door hatchback that offers two different engine options; a standard 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 132 hp/128 lb-ft of torque and a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 158 hp/162 lb-ft of torque. Drivers can choose between standard FWD or optional AWD and also have a variety of transmission choices including a 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic and 5-speed automatic. Fuel mileage falls between an EPA estimated range of 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway depending on engine, transmission and drivetrain selection. Features are comprised of 18-inch alloy wheels, daytime running lights, cruise control, fold-flat front passenger seat, remote keyless entry, 6-speaker sound system, fog lamps, audio steering wheel controls, hands-free phone capability and an optional DVD navigation system. Despite the slight price increase for the 2011 model year, the Matrix still comes down in the inexpensive end of the crossover and sport wagon segment. The base model with the manual transmission starts at $18,545. Vehicle stability control and traction control are standard even on the base model -- which achieves 26 mpg city and 32 mpg highway with the manual transmission.
