Audi R8 Spyder Models and R8 Spyder History

For late 2010, Audi expanded their R8 supercar offering with a different driving sensation. An all-new open top version of the Audi R8 came almost four years after the original hardtop version of the quattro all-wheel drive pleasure machine first satisfied high-performance North American audiences. The Audi R8 Spyder was immediately accepted as premium line motoring as the open-air two-seat cockpit and a flatter engine cover provided a unique silhouette for the distinctive supercar. Due to required structural reinforcements, the R8 Spyder 5.2 Quattro is roughly 220 pounds heavier than its hardtop companion. The first year release of the drop top supercar consisted only of models propelled by the 525-horsepower 5.2-liter V-10 engine. A lower-priced Audi R8 Spyder powered by a 4.2-liter V-8 was added to the lineup for 2011. Compared to the coupe models, top speed for the R8 Spyder is reduced while acceleration is also slightly slower due added weight. A minor update to the Audi R8 Spyder in 2013 included LED headlights and an available seven-speed S tronic transmission. After a brief production hiatus following the 2015 model year, the Audi R8 Spyder emerged as a strikingly styled new generation product for 2018 powered by a 540-horsepower 5.2-liter V-10 engine.
