BMW M6 Models and M6 History

The M6 name was first used by BMW in the 1980s with the performance version of their original 6 Series coupe. In 2006, the BMW M6 returned shortly after the reintroduction of the 6 Series. Propelled by a 500-horsepower 5.0 V-10 engine (the same found on the similar BMW M5 sedan, improved handling credentials including larger disc brakes also enhanced the M6. Carbon fiber is employed on areas such as the roof and bumpers of the BMW M6s body for optimizing weight. Available in a coupe or convertible body style, the 2009 BMW M6 was fitted with a standard seven-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG). Acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour was handled in as little as 4.5 seconds. Featuring an updated iDrive controller and HD radio, the 2010 model year was the final year for the ten-cylinder BMW M6 ahead of a 2012 refresh. Based on the reengineered 6 Series, the BMW M6 scaled to a new height in performance for the German luxury brand. Powering the 2012 BMW M6 was a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine that pumped-out 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Introduced as the most powerful coupe and convertible BMW has ever produced, the 2012 M6 was standard-equipped with handling features such as M Dynamic Damping Control and Active M Differential. A high-performance vehicle, the 2012 BMW M6 Coupe and Convertible also catered to the luxury tastes of occupants with features such as 14-way front heated seats, dual-zone climate control, 16-speaker stereo system and voice-activated navigation. For 2014, the BMW M6 can be equipped with optional carbon-ceramic brakes as well as a six-speed manual transmission.
