Chevrolet Tahoe Police Models and Tahoe Police History

Based on the GMT800 platform, Chevrolet’s 2002 Tahoe Police product was presented to law enforcement or other emergency first responders as a solid, capable full-sized sport utility vehicle. A successor to the Tahoe Police Special, the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe Police package featured new truck exterior styling as a durable frame featuring hydroformed construction. The 2002 Tahoe Police edition was offered as a two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle. Performance for the sport utility vehicle came from a 4.8-liter V-8 engine producing 275 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. Lacking some attributes related to some police packages, the 2002 to 2004 model year Chevrolet Tahoe Police models were not suitable for pursuit use. Reintroduced in 2005 as the Tahoe Police Vehicle, the rear-wheel drive Chevrolet utility vehicle was eventually regrouped when a new truck chassis debuted in 2007. Defining their law enforcement specialty sport utility vehicles as the Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) and the Special Service Vehicle, the redesigned Chevrolet Tahoe structure was catered to performance specific duties. Tailored for high-speed emergency responsiveness, 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV was only available as a rear-wheel drive model. Achieving a lower center of gravity, the Tahoe PPV was lowered by almost an inch compared to the four-wheel drive Special Service Vehicle. A stiffer suspension, H-rated Goodyear RSA tires mounted to 17-inch wheels, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock control and StabiliTrak electronic stability control with Proactive Roll Avoidance. The 2007 Tahoe Police model received the 5.3-liter Vortec V-8 engine that generates 320 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque. Dual 730 CC batteries system was optional with the law enforcement vehicle delivering electrical power for devices such as light bars and police radios.
