Ford Utility Police Interceptor Models and Utility Police Interceptor History

Similar to the attitudes for the general driving population, law enforcement has also been favoring sport utility and crossover vehicles since the 1990s. Arriving alongside the introduction of an all-new Interceptor sedan, Ford created a law enforcement-equipped version of the Explorer large crossover vehicle. Called the Police Interceptor Utility, the vehicle was introduced in 2013 boasting heavy-duty brakes, suspension, cooling and electrical system. A pursuit-rated vehicle, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility includes a large interior cargo space with an slide-out electronics tray and full-size spare tire. Initially offered only with a 3.7-liter V-6 engine, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility would add a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 for the 2014 model year. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions of the law enforcement crossover vehicle were immediately available. An updated 2016 Ford Police Interceptor Utility adopts new exterior styling and optional Surveillance Mode technology that automatically lock doors if the system detects someone approaching from the vehicle's rear. Another new factory option on the 2016 Police Interceptor Utility is a no-profile visor light bar.
