Mercedes Benz M-Class Models and M-Class History

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class premiered in the 1998 model year as the German luxury brand's first sport utility sold in the United States manufactured at a newly-built Alabama assembly plant. Although acknowledged as the M-Class, the luxury sport utility vehicle was commonly referred with the ‘ML' moniker including in Mercedes-Benz's familiar alphanumeric naming. Debuting as the ML320 powered by a 3.2-liter V-6 engine, a V-8 equipped ML430 was added for 1999. A high-performance centered 342-horsepower ML55 AMG arrived in 2000 while a manually selectable automatic transmission also appeared the same year. Equipment enhancements followed the M-Class through the first generation such as Hill Descent Control in 2001 and side curtain airbags in 2002. The second generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class debuted for the 2006 model year as a larger seven-passenger capacity vehicle. A diesel-powered ML320 CDI premiered in 2008 alongside a 502-horsepower ML63 AMG. Offered exclusively as an all-wheel drive since its inception, a 2009 refresh of the M-Class included a new rear-wheel drive. The following year, a hybrid gasoline/electric version of the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was added to the lineup but was dropped after 2011. Completely re-engineered in 2012, the sophisticated M-Class featured a new seven-speed automatic transmission as well as technologies such as Agility Control Suspension. After the 2015 model year, Mercedes-Benz adopted a new naming strategy to their vehicle lineup resulting in the M-Class being renamed the GLE-Class.
