BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo Models and 5 Series Gran Turismo History

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo cannot be categorized as either a sport sedan or hatchback but encompasses the attributes of both. Incorporating what is called a bi-modal trunk, BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo features an innovative rear-opening manner. The bi-modal trunk can open in car-like fashion or can provide an expanded opening similar to a crossover vehicle or hatchback. Introduced with first with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine, the 2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo shortly added a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six powerplant. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.


In addition to rear-wheel drive, the 400-horsepower 4.4-liter V-8 engine was available with xDrive all-wheel drive in 2010. All-wheel drive was expanded to the six-cylinder 5 Series Gran Turismo model the following year. Around 3.4 inches longer than a BMW 5 Series sedan, the 2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo features increased interior room for the front and rear passengers. A number of electronic driver assist programs are optional including lane departure warning system, night vision and speed limit display.


The 2012 model year offered the M Sport Package adding an aerodynamic kit, sport-tuned exhaust and increasing the speed limiter for the luxury vehicle. For 2014, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo was sizably restyled to greater refine the cross-segment look. Also in 2014, the V-8 powered BMW 550i Series Gran Turismo is granted the additional performance of 445 horsepower.
